The journal of Peter White through the last few years of WW2 during his time as an officer in the King’s Own Scottish Borderers. Its an amazing look into the minds of those that went to war as well as a fascinating look at how people from different areas of the country reacted to the world around them.
Reading about how the guy manages to learn how to understand the language of his troops is hilarious with White somehow managing to get the accent just right in his writing. In saying that though it took him almost until the end of the war to understand the guy from The Gorbals but it took me 5 attempts at reading what he’d said to understand it and I live just down the road from there!
Thoroughly good read.
