Goin' Down t' Allotment

We’re never going to have a huge haul from our garden. The ground is full of clay and constantly gets waterlogged. Add in to that I’m lucky if I’m going to have about 8′ x 6′ of vegetable patch from what I’m planning. Just enough to give us a taste of home grown vegetables but not enough for us to take it seriously.

So today I put my name on the waiting list for an allotment. The waiting list is huge apparently so it may be a couple of years before we get one but I can wait.

I’ve lived in my home town all my life, apart for a 6 month stint in the south side of Glasgow when I first started going out with my wife, and during that time I never knew we had allotments. Mind you for a town 60,000 strong 90 plots isn’t much but the only other place in the district that has them only has 12 plots so beggars can’t be choosers!

I’m not entirely sure of the plot sizes but I’ve applied for a half plot to see how things go with that. Theres no point getting a full plot if I won’t get time to use it properly and I’m not sure I actually know how much work I’m letting myself in for.

Hopefully by then I’ll know a bit more about what I’m doing and might actually have a plan to be able to harvest vegetables all through the growing year rather than getting 20 tomatoes and 13 cucumbers at the same time. In saying that though those cucumber plants that year were fantastic considering I grew them on a window ledge of a 4th story flat!
