The Niche Is The Thing

If you look around the internet you’ll find three or four different kinds of blogs. You’ve got the corporate blog, the personal blog much like this one, the niche blog and the blogs that can’t quite work out if they belong in the personal or niche category.

It’s the niche blogs that I have the greatest problem in running. I’ve got a couple of them running away in the background but I struggle to post to them. In fact I’d even go as far to say I find it impossible at times. I can write about myself until the cows come home but very few people on this planet are actually interested in that and if I’m perfectly honest I’m quite grateful for that. About 95% of the posts on this blog are about me or my family and friends I write them for myself. If someone else reads them then fair enough. The remaining 5% though are the seeds of niche blogs that I could never get around to running. I don’t pretend this blog is a master of all trades though which is were it differs from those personal sites that seem to have a finger in every niche but never actually go anywhere.

I guess my main problem is that I don’t feel I ever know enough to be an ‘authority’ on a subject which in turn means I never get past the idea growing into a post on here. I’ve got many varied interests but the thought of someone with more knowledge coming along and finding my site and going out their way to point out how badly I’ve got something wrong fills me with dread. Someone helping you out by correcting is one thing but the internet seems to breed armchair specialists in every subject and as a xkcd comic strip pointed out they never rest until they make sure everyone knows the right answer.

For those that may stumble upon this post that know this feeling how did you get over it and get those blogs up and running?

At first I had a personal blog. In fact I still do. But, when I figured out my niche, I had a lot easier time posting. Also, I think that if all your posts are based on experience, then someone can’t shoot you down, they can just add to the conversation because they had a different experience. I now run a blog called Teen Lawn Care. I am interested in my teen lawn business!

Oh, by the way, thanx for dropping on my entrecard :)

My fear though is that although I agree with you it would knock my confidence to have someone come at me like that.

If I was completely up to speed and knew my niche inside out it would be different but if I’m learning as I go I think it would be very easy to knock someone in that situation down.
